In motion, devotion to stillness.

In Samuel Beckett’s experimental piece Quad,
four figures move repeatedly along their own prescribed paths.
They approach the center, but never arrive there, nor remain there.

Gilles Deleuze sees in Quad not mere repetition, but a state of exhaustion.

Exhaustion is not a state of stopping out of fatigue.
It is a condition in which possible movements have been carried through,
and those movements can no longer be easily explained
as a single meaning or story.

When meaning comes first, we fail to see movement itself.
But when meaning no longer works so easily, other things begin to appear.

Rhythm, distance, silence, duration,
and an image that does not disappear.

We bring what appears at that moment into the question of architecture.

In architecture, too, meaning tends to come first.
The interpretation of place, the intention of form, and function
all try to explain space.

But over time, explanations wear thin, intentions slip, and functions change.

Still, we believe there are things that remain within space.

We call this quality of remaining Stillness.

Our question, then, is not directed toward completed meaning,
but toward what remains after meaning has lost its hold.

After explanation and novelty have served their purpose,
what does architecture leave in its wake?
